BIOGRAFIA DOS "THE CURE"
História
1973-1979 (Antecedentes e Formação)
A história dos The Cure, confunde-se com a de Robert Smith que nasce em 21 de Abril de 1959 em Blackpool, norte de Inglaterra. Acaba por se estabelecer com a família em Crawley, um súburbio de Londres. É um rapaz problemático e acaba por ser expulso da escola que frequentava, por ser considerado má influência para os seus colegas de escola. Apesar da expulsão, acaba por voltar às aulas sem que ninguém se aperceba. O tempo que não era usado nas aulas era passado em salas de estudo, ou então podiam também usar esse tempo em actividades culturais. O Robert decidiu formar uma banda para não ter que estar fechado numa sala a estudar.
O primeiro grupo que teve chamava-se The Obelisk que era composto por alunos Notre Dame Middle School de Crawley. Esta banda era composta por Robert Smith (piano), Michael Dempsey (guitarra), Lol Tolhurst (percusssão), Marc Ceccagno (guitarra solo) e Alan Hill (baixo). Em Janeiro de 1976 após deixar os Obelisk, Marc Ceccagno forma os Malice com Robert Smith - agora também na guitarra - e Michael Dempsey - que passou a baixista - juntamente com outros dois amigos de turma da St. Wilfrid's Catholic Comprehensive School. Passado pouco tempo Ceccagno abandona este projecto para se dedicar á sua nova banda, os Amulet. Pouco tempo depois entra para a banda vindo dos Obelisk, Lol Tolhurst e um guitarrista solo, já bastante conhecido na região pelas suas aptidões, Porl Thompson. Após várias tentativas para conseguirem um vocalista para a banda, Peter O'Toole acabou por ser escolhido. Neste periodo faziam covers de David Bowie, Alex Harvey, Jimi Hendrix, entre outros e começaram também a escrever o seu próprio material. Após alguns concertos que correram menos bem, Robert Smith decide recomeçar com um novo nome, Easy Cure, que surge do título de uma música escrita por Lol Tulhurst.
Concorrem a um concurso promovido por uma editora independente Alemã, a Hansa Records, que vencem, mas pouco depois percebem que tinham ganho o concurso não pelo seu valor mas pela sua imagem. Peter O'Toole abandona o projecto e o Robert assume a voz do grupo em Setembro de 1977. Pouco tempo depois rescindem o contracto com esta editora. O Robert deixa de achar piada ao nome da banda e muda-o para The Cure, pois soava-lhe demasiado "West Coast". Enviam as suas demos a todas as maiores editoras mas não obtêm qualquer resposta excepto do A&R da Polydor, Chris Parry, que os satisfez... e após algum o tempo convence-os a assinar, não pela Polydor mas sim pela sua própria editora, a Fiction Records. Os The Cure são os primeiros a assinar por esta editora.
O primeiro single da banda, Killing An Arab é lançado no Natal de 1978, single esse que é bem recebido pela crítica Inglesa. O primeiro álbum, Three Imaginary Boys, só sai em junho de 1979, igualmente recebido com muito boas críticas, no entanto o som que caracteriza o álbum, ainda com algumas influências Punk, músicas rápidas e directas, já não são a imagem do Robert Smith desta altura mas sim de um Robert do passado, do periodo Easy Cure. A capa deste álbum tem a particularidade de não ter nome de músicas e não ter imagem alguma da banda, apenas umas imagens relacionadas com cada uma das músicas, criando um certo mistério em torno da banda. Mas o que Chris Parry queria demonstrar com esta atitude era que a banda valia pela sua música e não pela sua imagem. Nesta altura eles queriam demonstrar que eram apenas simples pessoas a fazer música, sem qualquer tipo de imagem. Fazem uma tour de promoção ao álbum e logo de seguida são convidados para serem a banda de suporte para a banda Siouxsie & The Banshees, e lançam dois singles: Boys Don't Cry (Julho) e Jumping Someone Else's Train (Outubro). Após uma invulgar deserção no seio desta banda em plena tour, Robert Smith oferece-se para o lugar de guitarrista durante esta Tour e em cada concerto faria os dois "sets", tanto pelos Cure como pelos Banshees. Aqui termina a fase embrionária, mais ligada á fase Easy Cure e iniciar-se-ia a verdadeira essência da banda. O baixista, Michael Dempsey não se revia na direcção que a banda estava a tomar e decidiu afastar-se antes que Robert Smith o fizesse. Robert decide convidar o baixista Simon Gallup e o amigo deste, o teclista Matthieu Hartley.
1980-1982 (Período Gótico)
Após a gravação deste primeiro álbum o Robert inicia pouco depois a gravação do periodo mais "negro" dos The Cure. A trilogia, Seventeen Seconds, Faith e Pornography. Este periodo é considerado pela grande parte dos fãs como a melhor fase da banda, na qual foram produzidas canções belas e soturnas como A Forest, Play For Today, Primary, All Cats Are Grey, Faith, Charlotte Sometimes, One Hundred Years, The Figurehead ou A Strange Day. À ilusão do Seventeen Seconds, segue-se a letargia do desespero em Faith. Todo esse desespero e emoções contidas transformam-se em raiva, ódio e num desespero ainda mais exacerbado em Pornography, tornando este álbum um marco para a música alternativa.
É um periodo que fica também marcado pelos vários excessos por parte de todos os membros, nomeadamente drogas, o que os levou a distanciarem-se uns dos outros. Na Picture Tour de 1981 os concertos assemelhavam-se a cerimónias religiosas, com uma atmosfera altamente depressiva ao ponto da audiência não aguentar e provocar graves tumultos. Nesta tour antes dos concertos, em vez de uma banda de suporte, apresentavam o filme Carnage Visors de Ric Gallup (irmão de Simon Gallup), um filme animado que criava a atmosfera pretendida para o inicio do concerto. Era frequente o Robert acabar o concerto em lágrimas.
Em 1982 começam a alterar a sua postura de "não-imagem" e começam a mudar o seu visual na digressão do álbum Pornography. Pintam os olhos com batom (que com o suor dava uma sensação de estarem a sangrar dos olhos) e começam a deixar crescer o cabelo duma forma desgrenhada.
Vivia-se um ambiente de "mal estar" dentro da banda e os concertos eram feitos quase sem qualquer diálogo entre os membros. Este período, que levou os membros da banda ao limite das suas capacidades físicas e psíquicas, culminou em cenas de pancadaria entre Simon Gallup e Robert Smith em plena tour de 1982. Os The Cure como eram conhecidos até então tinham acabado. No fim da tour a banda tinha acabado, apesar de oficialmente, o fim nunca ter sido confirmado.
1983-1984 (Período de Indefinição)
Em 1983 numa altura de indefinição quanto ao futuro da banda, Robert Smith inicia um projecto paralelo com o baixista dos Banshees, Steve Severin de nome The Glove. Apenas editam um álbum que foi bastante marcante para os dois, Blue Sunshine. Andy Anderson seria o baterista dos The Glove.
Nesta altura, Robert Smith fazia também parte integrante da banda Siouxsie & The Banshees e é neste periodo com esta banda que Robert adopta a sua imagem de marca, pretendendo de alguma forma integrar-se estéticamente. Lábios esborratados de batom, olhos pintados e o cabelo levantado de uma forma despenteada. Fez tanto sucesso que a sua imagem tornou-se um ícone. O Robert nesta altura sentia-se perfeitamente confortável em ser "apenas" guitarrista e temendo perder o Robert definitivamente para os Banshees, Chris Parry (dono da Fiction Records) incita-o a gravar algo diferente e mais comercial.
Antevendo um descontentamento e desilusão dos fãs, o Robert sugere gravar com um nome diferente que não The Cure, mas Chris Parry consegue convencê-lo dos beneficios. E assim em 1983 surgem os singles Let's Go To Bed, The Walk e The Lovecats. Como Lol Tolhurst já não conseguia evoluir mais na bateria, passou para os teclados. Andy Anderson, seria o baterista nestas gravações e futuramente seria o novo baterista da banda. O produtor e baixista, Phil Thornalley seria o novo baixista.
Em 1984 os The Cure editam The Top, já com Porl Thompson, que já tinha estado ligado aos Easy Cure. Este é um álbum muito influênciado pela passagem do Robert pelos Banshees e também pela digressão que estes fizeram por Israel. É bastante diferente de tudo já alguma vez feito e deveras estranho, mas que com o tempo se torna cada vez mais apelativo e cativante. Um álbum que de tão estranho, foi recebido friamente e em parte Robert concorda com as críticas pois segundo ele, na altura, os The Cure eram ele e umas quantas pessoas e não verdadeiramente uma banda, de maneira que álbum foi quase completamente feito por ele. The Caterpillar é o único single deste álbum.
1985-1993 (Sucesso Comercial)
Em 1985, após uma longa conversa num bar, Simon Gallup regressa aos Cure e Andy Anderson entretanto já tinha sido substituido por Boris Williams na tour do The Top. O The Head On The Door é lançado e desta vez conseguem verdadeiramente atingir o "mainstream". Os singles In Between Days e Close To Me são músicas que ainda hoje se ouvem em qualquer lugar. A night Like This é o terceiro single do álbum. Para além desses clássicos este álbum possui outras preciosidades que marcam a história da banda como a Sinking, Push, The Baby Screams, entre outras. Foi um álbum que marcou a banda e os deu a conhecer ao mundo, pois até aqui tinham sido uma banda apenas conhecida em certos circuitos alternativos.
Em 1986 é quando o sucesso se torna num fenómeno de popularidade assim que os The Cure lançam a compilação Standing on a Beach/Staring at the Sea. Boys Don't Cry que quando foi lançado em 1980 não teve o sucesso esperado, em 1986 torna-se um hino da banda.
Em 1987 gravam no sul de França um disco duplo, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, um projecto arrojado, com músicas pop belas contrastando com músicas cheias de raiva fazendo relembrar o periodo mais negro da banda. Why Can't I Be You, Catch, Hot Hot Hot!!! e Just Like Heaven são algumas músicas do lado pop que contrastam com The Kiss, Torture ou If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, The Snakepit entre outras. Actuam pela primeira vez num país Lusófono - o Brasil. Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte e São Paulo foram as cidades contempladas.
Em 1989, surge o album que é considerado de uma forma mais ou menos consensual o melhor álbum da banda, Disintegration. Gravado numa fase particularmente difícil para o Robert, que na altura vivia a angústia da passagem para os trinta anos e da consciencialização de que o passado não volta, conseguiu canalizar todo o seu desespero para as suas letras e música. Nunca o triste e belo estiveram tão perto da perfeição. Com este disco alcançam com os singles bastante atenção mundial. Fascination Street, Pictures Of You, e principalmente, Lullaby (#5/UK) e Lovesong (#2/USA) alcançando óptimas posições nos "tops". Laurence Tolhurst, é afastado da banda devido aos seus problemas com o álcool e fraca contribuição para a banda. Roger O'Donnel que já tinha sido contratado anteriormente assegura a função totalmente. Após uma longa tour mundial, que inclusive passa por Lisboa (Estádio de Alvalade), Robert despede-se com um "goodbye and I'll never see you again". No entanto a sua ameaça não se viria a confirmar.
Em 1990 Robert Smith surpreende todo o mundo com um álbum de remixes de algumas das suas mais conhecidas músicas. Mixed Up é o nome do álbum, o qual choca tanto a crítica mundial como os seus próprios fãs.
Em 1992 sai um novo disco de orgiginais, Wish, que tinha a dificil missão de superar o admirável Disintegration. Por isso mesmo para muitos foi uma decepção. Mas esquecendo o facto de ser praticamente impossível superar tal álbum, Wish não deixa de ser notável. A Letter To Elise, High e especialmente Friday I'm In Love foram os singles, que mais uma vez atingiram os "tops" mundiais. Ignorando a parte comercial, este álbum possui igualmente temas marcantes como Open, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, To Wish Impossible Things, entre outras. Foi o álbum de originais que mais vendeu.
O The Cure tinha atingido o auge da sua fama. Seguiu-se mais uma gigantesca tour mundial, da qual seriam editados dois álbuns; Show (com o lado mais comercial do Cure) e Paris (priorizando as canções mais intimistas). Aqui terminava mais uma fase dos The Cure. Boris Williams e Porl Thompson estavam de partida. Roger O'Donnell já tinha sido substituído em 1990 pelo roady da banda, Perry Bamonte.
1994-1999 (Declínio Comercial)
Após a debandada e para agravar a situação, Lol Tolhurst decide colocar Robert Smith em tribunal por direitos sobre o nome da banda. Apesar de ter perdido o caso, Lol Tolhurst causa danos na banda, que neste periodo praticamente deixou de existir.
Em 1995, Robert consegue juntar alguns elementos e começa a pensar num novo álbum. Roger O'Donnel é convidado de novo para os teclados, Perry deixa os teclados e passa para a guitarra a tempo inteiro e Simon continua no baixo. Como solução para a falta de baterista, decidem colocar um anúncio na NME. Jason Cooper consegue o lugar.
Em 1996 sai um novo álbum, Wild Mood Swings, após o Wish de 1992, um periodo demasiado longo para um mundo demasiado activo e sedento de novas direcções que praticamente já os tinha esquecido e vivia absorvido pela moda do Britpop. No entanto o álbum fica bastante longe das expectativas criadas mesmo pelos próprios fãs. Um álbum bastante heterogéneo e com umas sonoridades completamente atípicas até então. Pela primeira vez um álbum de originais dos Cure tinha vendido menos que o seu antecessor. Seguiu-se uma nova tour mundial e que mesmo apesar do fracasso comercial do álbum, enchia os recintos por todo o mundo. Apresentam-se novamente no Brasil, para concertos em São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro.
Iniciava-se uma longa travessia no deserto, preenchida por alguns festivais de Verão, algumas colaborações e uma nova compilação de singles, Galore, em 1997, mas que desta vez não teve o sucesso esperado, apesar dos excelentes singles que esta compilação contém. O nome The Cure já não vendia como antes...
Em 1998 voltam a Portugal pela terceira vez, após os concertos de Alvalade em 1989 e do Super Bock Super Rock em 1995, agora regressavam para um concerto no festival do Sudoeste.
2000-2007 (Ressurgimento)
Em 2000 os The Cure regressam para segundo Robert Smith, completar a trilogia iniciada com os álbuns Pornography e Disintegration e que agora seria completada com o Bloodflowers. Logo depois da tour, segundo ele acabaria com os Cure. Mais uma vez a sua "ameaça" não seria concretizada. O disco, apesar de não estar ao nível dos outros dois, reanima sem dúvida os The Cure, reavivando o entusiasmo pela banda. O album foi nomeado para um Grammy Award, na categoria de melhor álbum de rock alternativo. Seguiu-se uma nova tour Mundial e uma certa aclamação pela banda.
Em 2002 fazem uma nova tour Europeia por alguns dos maiores festivais do velho continente entre os quais uma vez mais o festival do Sudoeste em Portugal e no fim do ano, mais concretamente em Novembro fazem três concertos inesquecíveis, os famosos concertos da trilogia (Pornography, Disintegration e Bloodflowers) nas cidades de Bruxelas e Berlim. Em cada uma destas três noites a banda apresentou-nos ao vivo estas três obras completas perante uma audiência em delírio. As duas últimas noites podem ser revistas parcialmente no DVD "Trilogy" entretanto editado pela banda.
Apesar de já algumas bandas o terem referido no passado, é por esta altura que começam mais frequentemente a referir Smith e os Cure como uma das suas principais influencias.Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, Interpol, Mogwai, Deftones, Bloc Party, Dinosaur Jr., Blink 182, Jane's Addiction, My Chemical Romance, são algumas das bandas que podemos referir, já não referindo uma interminável lista de bandas góticas que foram e são obviamente muito influênciadas pelos The Cure. A banda é considerada uma das bandas que mais influênciou o rock alternativo moderno. E com isto a banda recebe um prémio da revista inglesa Q, "The Most Inspiring Band" perante uma plateia que recebeu Robert Smith de pé.
Em 2004 lançam um novo álbum, The Cure é o nome do novo álbum. Aclamado pela imprensa internacional e pelos fãs e segundo alguma imprensa, o melhor álbum desde o Disintegration. A MTV promove uma homenagem aos The Cure com a presença e depoimentos de várias bandas. Entram para o Rock Walk of Fame, e passam a figurar ao lado das maiores lendas de música rock mundial. Após uma pequena Tour Europeia, que desta vez passa pelo festival de Vilar de Mouros, Robert promove uma nova revolução na banda. Perry e Roger saem da banda sem grandes revelações dos motivos para tal e Porl Thompson, guitarrista e ídolo dos fãs da banda estava de regresso. A estreia neste seu regresso deu-se nos palcos do Live 8.
Nova tour com a "nova" banda seguiu-se em 2005 e a promessa de um novo álbum em 2006, que entretanto foi adiado para 2007 e depois para junho ou maio de 2008. As gravações continuam em curso. Em Julho de 2007 teve inicio a digressão mundial que começa na Ásia, passa pela Oceânia (Austrália e Nova Zelândia), seguidamente América do Norte e segundo Robert Smith chegará à Europa em Março de 2008.
Robert Smith diz que a espera pelo novo album valerá a pena, pois além de ser duplo ele incluirá gravações até então perdidas de músicas do início da banda. Já foi divulgado o nome de algumas das faixas que estarão inclusas no album:
